Akatsi Youth To Stage Demo Against ECG

…Over Distribution Of Estimated Bills, Unjust Disconnections

Concerned youths of Akatsi in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region, have scheduled to stage a massive demonstration against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over what they described as exorbitant electricity tariff, as well as unjust disconnection of residents, mostly on holidays.

The protest march, dubbed “Evaglo” to wit “we are fed up” is intended to draw the attention of management of the power distribution company, to stop the continuous distribution of estimated bills to residents, instead of serving them with actual bills.

According to the organizers, they will no longer be silent on the injustices against the residents and as youths, they will continue to demand answers from their leaders, to address the issues affecting them.

“We will no longer be silenced by the injustices we face. As youths, we will continue to demand action from our leaders to address the issues affecting our district. Enough is enough,” the convener stated while addressing the media.

The protest march, which is expected to draw thousands of participants, is slated to take place on the principal streets of the town on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, starting at 8:00 in the morning.

Mr Sitsofe Vuvor, also known as ‘Kawawa’ who is leading the group, said the residents are only demanding “a reduction in the high estimated bills, an end to the illegal disconnections on holidays” among others.

He said it is unacceptable for the Akatsi South Branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana, to presume energy consumption of the residents without first reading their meters, stressing “we will no longer tolerate this injustice”.

Mr Vuvor, assured that the demonstration would be peaceful and open to all residents of Akatsi South Constituency, who are concerned about the high electricity tariff and unjust disconnections.

In a letter to notify the Ghana Police Service, Mr Vuvor, indicated that the demonstrators would be addressed at the premises of the Akatsi Municipal Assembly, where the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) would also be presented a petition.

He said, the protest will start from the Lorry Park of the Akatsi Main Market and proceed to the Municipal office of the ECG, close to the District Assembly.

He concluded by saying, the conduct of the power distribution company, amount to a violation of PURC laws, hence their quest to demand transparency and accountability from the management.
