PAC Orders Arrest of N/R NSA Director

…Over GH¢160,000 Chop-Chop

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has issued a directive for the immediate arrest of the Northern Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA) due to the failure to deposit over GH¢160,000 in internally generated funds.

He failed to pay the funds into the designated Consolidated Fund Transit account of the Authority.

The 2022 Auditor General’s report highlights the Northern Regional Management of the Sports Authority for the expenditure of the funds, which violates the Public Financial Management Regulations, 2019.

Despite being summoned, the Regional Director did not appear before the Public Accounts Committee to explain the actions outlined in the report.

At yesterday’s sitting, the Chairman of PAC, Dr. James Klutse Avedzi, directed the Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, to ensure that the two, regional director and his accountant to be arrested as soon as possible.

“We are instructing the police to pick up the regional director and accountant of the region without delay. You were invited to testify before Parliament, and you declined, despite being aware that you had misused over GH¢160,000, presuming that you would escape consequences.”

This was after the Director-General of the NSA, Prof. Dr. Peter Twumasi, told the committee that an official letter was sent to the Regional Director in Tamale inviting her to appear before the committee.

However, he said the director refused to show up for the meeting.

The PAC chairman, Dr.Klutse Avedzi, who described the Tamale office as “rotten,” promptly instructed the minister to get them arrested.

“The Regional Director and the Accountant should be picked by the police. They should be picked up immediately. “And you think that we will leave you scot-free?” Dr.Avedzi said.

He also recommended for a thorough investigation into the activities of the entire NSA across the country.
