Organize Fresh Election In Yendi

– Hajia Abibata Petitions NPP NEC

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been petitioned to hold a fresh parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency in the Northern Region.

The petitioner, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama,  who was an aspirant in last Saturday, January 27 election, says the election result should be declared as “null, void and of no effect whatsoever.”

The concern of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Microfinance and Small Loan Centre (MASLOC) follows the chaos that erupted at the tail end of the poll, following a desperate attempt to rig the election in favour of the incumbent MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama.

The election, which was part of over 100 constituencies across the country where elections were held, was marred by confusion, bringing the whole process to an abrupt end.

In the midst of the chaotic scene, thumb-printed ballot papers were destroyed and some other persons, including journalists and police officers, were attacked allegedly by the MP and his supporters.

Because of this, the MASLOC boss wants the election declared null, void and of no effect whatsoever.

She also wants the mother party to take steps to ensure that all party executives, any government official complicit in the election sanctioned.

She mentioned in the petition in particular, that the 3rd Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, who regardless of the chaos, declared the incumbent winner, be punished.

EC officials who were alleged to have played a role in the chaos be punished by the election management body.

The petitioner is also asking NEC to declare that Parliamentary Primaries Protocols issued on January 22 be enforced that the only body mandated to conduct and declare results of 2024 Parliamentary Primaries of Yendi was the Electoral Commission (EC)

“Declare that neither the 3rd Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, nor any party executive, party officer, nor any government appointee has the mandate to conduct or declare results or winner of the NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held on the 27th of January 2024,” the petition said in part.

Hajia Mahama is also asking NEC to restrain the Member of Parliament from holding himself as the MP-elect for the constituency.

According to her, the election was tainted with substantial irregularities, violations, infractions and therefore lost its validity.

Hajia Mahama, whose petition was submitted with video evidence of the chaos, said “Make an order prohibiting the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama, from holding himself up as the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) Elect of the Yendi Constituency for the 2024 Elections.”
