The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency in the Western Region, George Mireku Duker, has donated a motorcycle each to all electoral area coordinators of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The coordinators, numbering 30, are expected to benefit from the gesture to complement effective discharge of their responsibilities and oversights, as they coordinate the activities of the party.
The donation, which was made on Saturday, July 10, 2023,at a brief ceremony, forms part of the MP’s commitment to resource the party at the constituency level towards the 2024 election and beyond.
According to this paper’s information, the constituency, comprising 251 polling stations, with over 30 electoral areas, has a significant number of its communities in remote areas, thereby making coordinating work difficult for some of the coordinators.
In his remarks after the donation, Mr. Duker, who is also the deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources responsible for Mines, said he believes the gesture will help in the effective delivery of the party’s duties and supervisory activities.
“I firmly believe that the motorcycles will aid our coordinators to effectively discharge special party duties, monitor and supervise various developmental projects in their area and their personal use,” he said.
He mentioned that providing resources for party’s structures is a crucial step towards consolidating the needs of the citizenry.
“Resourcing various party structures is a crucial step towards consolidating the gains of services we render to Ghanaians,” he stated.
The gesture, The Anchor is informed, was among numerous empowerment things being done to provide opportunities for the constituents.
Not long ago, the MP took a major step to boost personal development of his constituents, by donating 300 industrial sewing machines and 150 hairdryer machines to 450 women in the constituency.
The donation is a continuation of a plan, which is already in motion, and aimed at elevating the living standards of people of the constituency, and reducing poverty in the area.
The MP, since his election, has put hundreds of people through skills-training and equipped them afterwards to start their own businesses.
The event formed part of his usual weekend visits to the constituency, which saw the MP donating 400 pieces of cloth to 400 traders at the Tarkwa central market, ahead of this year’s Mother’s Day celebration.
According to Mr.Duker, before the donation, he had engagements with the women’s caucus of the NPP Tarkwa-Nsuaem, which comprised all women holding polling station executive positions.
Speaking in an interview, he said he donated the 300 industrial sewing machines and the 150 hairdryer machines upon request.
“I had an engagement with the women’s caucus of the NPP Tarkwa-Nsuaem which comprised all women holding Polling Station Executive positions. I donated 300 industrial sewing machines and 150 hairdryer machines upon request. I also met with market women at the Tarkwa central market where I donated 400 pieces of cloth ahead of the Mother’s Day celebration,” he said.
He explained that he gave the sewing machines and hairdryers as his way of helping the women venture into self-engineered businesses to boost the development agenda of the Tarkwa-Nsuaem constituency.
“It’s about women empowerment. One of my major interests as a Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem is empowering the women of my constituency, and it is something I have been doing over the years.
“This time around, about 450 women were given sewing machines and hairdryers to enable them to go into self-engineered businesses. This initiative came about as a result of numerous calls on the MP of the area to support in the traditional handicrafts,” he explained.
