Medeama SC Historic Victory Unites Tarkwa

…As Vindictive Politicking Disappears For Celebration

Last Sunday’s historic victory of Tarkwa-based MedeamaSC, by winning the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League title, has brought the entire townsfolk in Tarkwa-Nsuaem and its adjoining communities together to celebrate, devoid of the usual partisan politics.

The Anchor observed that, even before the central referee would signal for the end of the match at the Akoon Park, where the home team was bullying visiting Tamale City side, the entire mining town had already erupted into joyous celebrations.

The celebrations, which had travelled deep into the night, saw residents, both young and old, throng the streets in wild jubilation, with major nightclubs and drinking spots recording massive customer turnouts.

The political class was also not left out, as some activists of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were spotted together, rejoicing in spirit of unity, after 47years of premier league title drought for the Western Region.

Medeama’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Tamale City, with goals from Joshua Agyemang and Jonathan Sowah sealed the historic league triumph for the Tarkwa-based team.

For many, the Tarkwa-based club, which has been in an impressive form in recent times, in fact, deserve to be winners of the Ghanaian championship, having come close to clinching the title on two occasions in the past seasons.

In 2018, the team was leading the league standings and were clear favourites to win the league, but an exposé on bribery and corruption by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas halted the season.

Many have attributed the success of the club to great leadership and unflinching support given the playing body and entire team by certain individuals and stakeholders who have been instrumental to see the area develop, not only through mining, but also through sports.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa Nsuaem, George Mireku Duker, for instance, is said to be a strong pillar behind the team, providing all manner of support for the club.

His efforts have seen various sports facilities springing up in the Tarkwa Nsuaem municipality, including an ultra-modern stadium currently at the completion stage being built in the mining city.

Mr. Duker, who was present at the Akoon Park during the club’s coronation game on Sunday, was confident that the Premier League champions, Medeama SC, will make Ghana proud when they play in next season’s CAF Champions League.

“We’re so excited. We thank the Almighty God for bringing us this far. We anticipated for it. We worked for it and we’ve seen it today and we believe the sky is even beyond the limit,” he told StarTimes.

“We’re going to do more and ensure that we represent Ghana well in Africa. That’s what we’re preparing for and we are so determined to work hard to make you proud,” he added.

According to him, he was excited that, as an MP, he has led his people and shown leadership to ensure after 47years in the history of the region, they have finally seen a premier league trophy.

He said, “It’s been very tiring moment and difficult journey, it hasn’t been easy at all from the beginning of the league we were not doing well at all, we had to come in and motivate the players, encourage them to do more. And work extra hard, that is what we have done and that is what they listened to and that is where we are today.”

“I am so excited, more than excited as a Member of Parliament I have been able to lead my people, shown leadership years ago when great Hasaacas won a trophy of this nature, Western Region hasn’t seen a trophy of this nature before, this is the first time for 47 years,” he added.
