Even ‘Akpeteshie’Is Now GH¢4

A former Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has added his voice to the growing concerns about the manner prices of goods and services have overnight skyrocketed in the country.

According to Nana Obiri Boahen, prices of goods have gone up so much that even a local gin, popularly known as Akpeteshie, which is considered as cheapest alcoholic drink, has also increased astronomically.

The frightening increase in prices of goods has left the Bono Region-based private legal practitioner asking how this year’s Christmas will be celebrated.

Speaking on Accra-based Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia morning show, hosted by Kwame Nkrumah Tikesie, the NPP stalwart and strong believer in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bidis worried about the never-ending spike in prices at the market.

He was amazed at the prices of items as he could not come to terms with the reality that the popular gin, which used to be sold cheaply, is now GHc4 a tot.

“I am not a person who likes to politicize issues but the bottom line is that prices of goods are shooting up and we are compelled to ask ourselves if we will be able to celebrate the Christmas.

“Do you know akpeteshie which used to be cheap is now selling at GH¢4 per tot? Now a full bottle of akpeteshie is going for GH¢25.

“It shows how prices of every item have shot up and it is very alarming. We need to accept the reality,” he said.

He was however hopeful that things will get better expressing confidence that the situation will be turned around for a win in the 2024 general elections.

Mr.ObiriBoahen, who shelved his own quest to become the General Secretary of the NPP to support the Bawumia presidential ambition, said his choice of candidate, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Management Team (EMT), will emerge as the eventual winner of the party’s presidential primary next year.

He said this will propel Dr.Bawumia to win the national election, despite the current state of the economy.

“But that notwithstanding, my inner self tells me that Dr.Bawumia will win,” he said.

Prices of items especially groceries have shot up over the past months with many expressing frustration and disgust about the issue.

The situation has become so alarming that both the Minority side and some Majority members in Parliament have called for the removal of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Though their quest has not been granted, pressure continues to pile up on the minister, who has been accused variously by individuals and groups.

Others like private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has even gone to the extent of calling for not only the finance minister to resign but President Akufo-Addo, as well as his vice, Dr.Bawumia.
