Solomon Adey wins maiden national Otumfuor draught tournament

Greater Accra’s Solomon Adey has won the maiden national edition of Otumfuor draught competition dubbed ‘Otumfuor Dame Akansie.’

The 42-year-old triumphed over the likes of Evans Koranteng also of the Greater Accra region and Atta Kofi Junior and Michael Abu.

‘Dame Akansie’ was organized by the Ghana Draught Federation and sponsored by Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II and Accra Brewery Limited.

The event, which took place at the Manhyia Palace, drew thirty-two participants from eight regions.

Mr. Adey received a trophy, GH¢10,000 cash prize and a mattress and GH¢5000, GH¢3000 and GH¢2000 were given to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed winners respectively. All the winners received a medal and ABL products.

Solomon was happy that though he has paused on the game for some time now, he emerged victorious.

“We played the draught and nothing was coming and I stopped for a while. I’m very glad I’ve been able to achieve this trophy,” he said.

Five-time national champion, Michael Abu, also known as Abu National who came third was hopeful he will come back strong.

“I’ll do my homework well and emerge victorious next time,” he said.

President of the Ghana Draught Federation, Nana Saaman Nantwi II hinted that the four winners will compete in the International Draughts Federation’s tournament in Bulgaria.

“Now, draught has become well known and the four winners will be going to Bulgaria to compete in the IDF’s tournament,” he said.
