Nearly 7m students affected by strike by teachers – Apaak

Builsa South Member of Parliament, Dr Clement Apaak has said that closed to seven million school children – from Kindergarten to Senor High school – have been affected by the industrial action by teacher unions in the country.

He blamed the government for refusing to be proactive in resolving the issues of the teachers to enable them continue teaching.

Dr Apaak told journalists that “As we speak, close to 7 million students from Kindergarten through primary school to Junior High School to Secondary Schools are currently not benefiting from teaching and learning.

“Clearly, this is as a result of government ‘s inability to meet its obligations that they will be proactive in addressing the needs and demands of the labour unions including teachers.”

The leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) and Teachers & Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) have asked their members to withdraw their services beginning today, Monday July 4.

This decision was announced by General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah Tanko on Monday July 4.

The unions earlier gave the government by end of June this year to grant the 20 per cent COLA or risk the anger of over 240,000 teachers nationwide.
